Anik Alam - Class of 2021

"One year he went on a trip to Malaysia and brought back a key chain...It doesn't have a giant meaning behind it, but it's something that reminds me that I have a close friend."

Name someone who inspires you.

I would have to go with Mr. Fieberg for sure. He's always very positive. He's uplifting. He's the kind of teacher that you always want to have and the kind of teacher you always want to be around. He's always there to help you out and he does it sincerely.

Can you give me a piece of advice?

If you're on the fence about doing something, whether it's like going to activities, hanging out with friends to leave in like, for like a decision, like a job or something you should at least try. You don't want to have to go back and feel that regret of thinking, "What if I did it?" or anything along those lines.

Can you tell me about a time that maybe you felt down?

A bit of towards the end of sophomore year, I suppose. And maybe like going into the summer, because I regretted not really having done too many social events or like doing too many things. But then that sort of changed when I did robotics because then I was sort of with like a team like another family and that helped a lot.

What does it mean to be part of a community?

Specifically in robotics, being part of that community, it's like another family. We all always like hanging out with each other. It's not formal. Like we work when we need to but, we're always having fun with each other, making jokes, getting food together, just hanging out saying hi to each other in school and you pass by each other. And that's sort of like, it's sort of like a bond you don't really get anywhere else. Even with friends. It's sort of like a different thing altogether.

Do you feel like you have made an impact here?

Yes. I feel like I have with my friends. Especially this year trying to be more positive. I feel like that's sort of shown with my friends and just people around me. I just try to greet everyone with a smile, and I hope that's made other people happy as well.

What is your greatest struggle?

I would say being expressive with other people. Maybe being expressive with other people and like texting and like email and like that kind of communication but also being expressive with other people in general. Maybe people that I haven't known as long. This is especially with new people that I meet. I can't really be too expressive and I don't want to come off as like weird or off putting.

Do you have any regrets?

I would say just not being more open with my friends and not going to like school events and stuff. I feel like even though I've only been through freshman or sophomore year, I feel like I could have enjoyed something like that with friends.

Current thoughts/Whims

Well, looking into college is kind of stressful. That sort of thing is just stressful as a whole. School is kind of stressful, but I'm getting through it. I'm getting by and I'm learning a lot. And I'm starting to be a lot more social. I've started to go to more social events. I'm happy about that. And I just hope it keeps going that way. I've been friends with Jayce since the third grade. One year he went on a trip to Malaysia and brought back a key chain. It's not huge, but I enjoy keeping it with me because it symbolizes our friendship and how long we've been friends. It doesn't have a giant meaning behind it, but it's something that reminds me that I have a close friend like Jayce, who I can always talk to for anything.
