Lilly Ebbs - Class of 2023

March 30, 2023: Series 05

"Just being able to like put it on paper so I can kind of express my freedom is really cool."

How does art allow you to express yourself?

I feel like I'm able to kind of put my thoughts onto like, maybe a canvas or a piece of paper. And it I don't know, when I was younger I always kind of used to idolize people who could like, draw, and it's so funny and I'll come up with an idea and I'm like, wait, I could draw that. I'm able to express like my feelings kind of thing like with just, I don't know. Just being able to like put it on paper so I can kind of express my freedom is really cool.

What is your favorite art medium and why?

Um, it's definitely a close call between digital and oil. Both of them have their pros and cons. Oil is very hard to work hard. Um, it's, but the end result is always so amazing. And digital, it took me a while to get the hang of it. It's definitely a lot different than using like regular paper and pencil. And yeah, I like both of them. But I think I like oil a little bit more especially since that's what we've been working on in like art class and stuff like that. Yeah, definitely has like opened a whole new door of like, like trying new things and stuff like that than digital has.

Describe your favorite piece and what it means to you.

I really like what I have been doing for one of my projects for Art 3 squared. It's a giant canvas of like a bunch of like clouds and stuff like that. It was one of my more ambitious projects. I'm doing three total and two are more ambitious and then one is kind of like a little fun, a fun little thing that I'm just doing. You know, but the cloud one I was little nervous to get started on it because I was like, “I have no idea how I'm going to do this.” But when I got started, it ended up turning out really, really well. doesn't look anything like the reference anymore. But the reference was kind of just like a starting point, and then I kind of just went off from there. I used similar colors. But that is definitely my favorite piece for sure because of how much work I had to put into it. It helps me a lot with time management. I'm very bad at not rushing through art pieces. So that helped me slow down and was like “wait a minute, let's let it dry and then layer it” you know, so yeah, that I think that was my favorite.

Who/what are your artistic influences and why are they important to you?

This is gonna get depressing. My dad was definitely one of the big ones. He was the one that got me started into art. I actually wrote my one of my college essays about this. He would draw horses for me when I was younger. I’d be like “Dad, can you draw me a horse?” He was the artistic one in the family. My mom was the creative one but my dad was the one that was able to put it like onto paper. So he definitely influenced me a lot. I would like watch him draw and then I'd be like, “Oh, I can do that.” And I was not able to do that. But eventually, eventually I got there. Most of my entire family are artists. Addy, my sister is very, like, artistic too and my mom's just a very creative person. I like to say that I inherited her creativeness and my dad's artistic ability. Sometimes it doesn't show through, but most of time I like to think that it does so yeah.

What are your favorite parts about Sage Creek’s art program? Anything you would change?

I don't think I would change anything. I am a little bit bummed that we're getting our AP art studio to design the year after I leave. Um, but it's certainly gonna be a great program for other artists. I think it's really cool that we're finally getting an AP art that's not like Art History. But I love that Miss Herrick allows us to come back and take Art 3 again, but to do our own projects to build our portfolios and stuff like that. Even for people that aren't going to go into art in college like I am. I think I just really liked that she allows us to come back. And you can see the improvement that people have made. I look back at my art from like, freshman year that I did in the class and I like, it's crazy how much I've improved since then. And how other people who have improved to, all my classmates. The art class community pretty much stayed the same, or at least there were some people that did art freshman year to get the credits out of the way. But overall, like the people that did art freshman year stayed with it until senior year. So yeah, I don't know. It was really cool.
