"A lot easier for them to understand than me trying to explain it through words. I guess art shows what words can’t."
How does art allow you to express yourself?
While I don’t use art as a way to express my emotions, I think it's a really good way to like, show what my mind is thinking. It's cool to be able to literally draw out my exact thoughts to someone you know? A lot easier for them to understand than me trying to explain it through words. I guess art shows what words can’t.
Describe your favorite piece and what it means to you.
My favorite piece is probably uh my final from Art 3 last year. I never really finished it but I mean I’m taking Art 3 again this year so maybe I will. It's like a uh aquarium inside of a human skeleton. Originally when I was painting it I think I meant for the bones to resemble like a dead coral reef to try to symbolize like how humans killing the earth is actually just gonna kill them.
What are your favorite parts about Sage Creek’s art program? Anything you would change?
My favorite part of Sage Creek’s art program has got to be Mrs. Herrick. She is just the nicest and lets us have a lot of artistic freedom with our projects. She also makes us hot chocolate on cold or rainy days, like an art class tradition. If I could change anything about the program, I would make it so we have more levels to the art classes. Right now, there’s only three levels of art, but that means you like have to retake art if you want to keep doing it, so you have to do the same projects and activities, with some variation.
What is your favorite art medium and why?
My favorite art medium is probably either oil paint or gouache. I just uh picked up both mediums in the last year and I really like them. Gouache is weird I think the best way to describe it is a cross between oil and watercolor paints. It is easy to work with like watercolor but it is more thick and less transparent. Oil is a lot harder to work with, and I am still really getting the hang of it. But uh I think it helps a lot with realism and really makes shading softer and more like interesting or appealing I guess.
