Angelina Parra - Class of 2021

November 15, 2021: Series 02

"For anyone, it's very important to talk to someone you're comfortable with because you're only causing pain on yourself if you're keeping it in."

What has changed in your life for you and your family during this pandemic?

Well the biggest changes during this pandemic were my mom and school. I understand it's difficult for students who are in class vs online because they are being taught differently. For example, students in person do more activities versus students online. Personally, I don't think going online has affected my schooling because I can do my classwork on my own time. Another big change that has affected my family was my mom because around October she was diagnosed with breast cancer stage 0-1. She had to go through series of radiation and chemotherapy, even though it was difficult to see her go through this, my mom is one of the strongest people you'll ever meet. She is filled with so much kindness and hope and because of this, it has helped shape my sister and me to become better people.

How do you think COVID has changed the world as a whole?

I think that COVID has made people more aware of different problems because people have more time to think and reflect on each situation. Another thing I think that was caused by COVID was the blooming of social media. Social media has help spread more awareness but also caused more depression because of quarantine, we are isolating ourselves from the world.

How have you been taking care of your mental and overall health?

Honestly at the beginning of quarantine, my mental health didn't matter because I was always socializing with friends or family members. During the middle of pandemic, my mental health got so much worse because this was during the time with my mom's situation. I was in a severe depression and chose to isolate myself rather than talking about it. My depression was so bad that I had two choices, either struggle through the pain or talk about it. I picked to talk about it, the best decision I could make. I talk about everything that I was feeling whether it was my physical look of being overweight, I have learned to love my curves, or watching my mom in a vulnerable stage. For anyone, it's very important to talk to someone who you're comfortable with because you're only causing pain on yourself if you're keeping it in. You have to remember that there's someone out there who cares so much about you and you should fight for them.

How do you think this pandemic will affect your future?

I don't think the pandemic has affected my future in a bad way but on the contrary. I feel like most colleges can pay attention to students because they had more free time.

Why do you think it's important to have human interactions with each other?

Because people love to talk, it's our human nature. Unfortunately, some people don't have others to talk to or willing to listen, being able to socialize with others, we can find more people that share common things with. We can express ourselves, learn from others, and be given more opportunities.
